Vertical Alignment

Having the advantage of being a new school, the curriculum feature OF NHCA began as a clean slate.  Vertical alignment of materials and curriculum was of great importance as we set out to determine the best choices for our students.

Vertical alignment is a very easy concept to understand, but not as easy to implement.  Generally speaking, vertical alignment of  curriculum considers three specific characteristics.  Vertically aligned curriculum should be:

(1) well organized and purposefully designed to facilitate learning 
(2) free of academic gaps and needless repetitions 
(3) aligned across lessons, courses, subject areas, and grade levels.
 

When educators map a curriculum for vertical alignment, they are working to ensure that what students are actually taught matches the academic expectations in a particular subject area or grade level; and more importantly, prepare the student for success at the next grade level.

The curriculum at NHCA is not only strongly vertically aligned, but it also allows for reinforcement in possible previous gaps students may have had prior to learning at New Hope Christian Academy.  We use informal assessments in both the Math and English Language Arts to insure the students have the necessary skills and knowledge to go on to the next area of study within the subject being taught.  The flexibility within the ELA  and the Math curricula used at NHCA allows for a fluid movement both as review and moving ahead for the needs of individual students.
